 by: Vera Raposo

Card making is the perfect way to express your feelings for others in a unique, creative way. Holidays, birthdays, and special occasions are preserved in our memories forever through cards and photos.

Purchasing greeting cards has traditionally been the way to express affection, excitement, sadness, and any other number of emotions. With a little creativity and thought you can create personalized cards that will leave lasting impressions on your friends and family.

Photos, textured paper, and your personal sentiments can be used to make greeting cards for all occasions. With the technology that is now available, it is easy to scan and print copies of your favorite photos and mementos and include them in your hand made greeting cards.

For holidays, you may want to create cards in unique shapes such as Christmas stockings, turkeys, hearts, pumpkins, and flags. You can include photos of previous holidays, printed clip art from free online sources, and small reminders of any other traditions or events that are special to you and your family.

Metal Detecting - Understanding the Technology Is Important
 by: Robert W. Benjamin

Metal Detecting for fun or profit can be one of the most exciting and rewarding of hobbies. A metal detector can cost very little, as low as $50 or higher that $400 for a top of the line model. This is one hobby where you really do get what you pay for, because the more expensive top of the line detectors use the most advanced technology and they have the best features available.

Metal Detectors use one of three types of technology:

BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillation) - Metal Detectors using BFO technology have two coils of wire, one large coil is located in the search coil of the detector, the other small coil of wire is located within the System Control Pack. Each coil of wire is connected to an oscillator that produces pulses of current. These pulses of current pass through the coils generating radio waves. A receiver housed within the System Control Pack receives the radio waves and makes a series of tones based upon the frequencies of the radio waves. When the detector search coil passes over a coin or other metal item a magnetic field is created around the coin or metal item, this magnetic field causes interference with the frequency of the radio waves generated by the search coil. And changes the tone produced by the reciever.

The Game of Life

January 30, 2010

When your life becomes unbearable And the light of promise ceases to glow, When all your dreams and aspirations Lie dormant on ambition’s death row.

When you feel that all is hopeless, Life troubles just seem to abound. When those you thought were supporters Are suddenly nowhere to be found;

When weary from the struggle of trying And you wonder to yourself, “What’s the use?” You fight on to do the best that you can But once again, all hell breaks loose.

When things in your life become disjointed And everything you touch turns stale. When nerves are on edge from life’s pressures, And there’s no breath with which to exhale.

When the road you are traveling gets bumpy And the hills become harder to climb, When the going gets tougher and tougher And persist for a considerably long time.

Remember, it’s not what you expect from life, But rather, what life expects from you. When the wind of quandary blows your way, Life wants to see just how well you’ll do.

You see, life is really like playing a game. To win, you must play as it dictates. If you follow its built-in survival rules, Your troubles will miraculously dissipate.

Easy Does It - Small-Scale Tricks to Dazzle Your Audience

Easy Does It - Small-Scale Tricks to Dazzle Your Audience
 by: Chris Lloyd

How to Get Started If You’re a Beginner

Whether you’ve been practicing magic for two days, two

years, or twenty, the only effective magic trick is one

that actually “fools” your audience. This ability to create

a good illusion depends in huge part on one thing:

rehearsing!

Let’s face it-no matter how great a trick is or how useful

a magic prop is, you won’t surprise or delight anyone

unless it’s performed smoothly and confidently. What if you

drop your deck of cards or accidentally mishandle a coin?

The illusion will be destroyed, and you’ll have lost your

audience’s trust.

When you’re just starting out it’s understandable that

you’ll have to practice in front of an audience several

times before you get it just right. No one expects you to

be perfect right away. But you also can’t expect to fool

anyone unless you put in the time to practice your skills

and work with your props (if you are using any).

The tricks in this chapter were chosen because they are

Pinhole Photography: Right Back to Basics

January 29, 2010

Why Pinhole Photography?

It’s fun. It’s creative. It’s educative about the basics that photographers deal with whenever they do their thing.

What is Pinhole Photography?

At its simplest, a pinhole camera is just a light tight cardboard box with a piece of aluminium pie dish containing a pinhole to expose the film or photographic paper.

Of course you need to design a shutter, (your thumb will do), some way to hold the film in place and a system to seal up the opening where you put the film in the pinhole camera.

There is no viewfinder; you just point the pinhole camera in the right direction. You can draw some lines on top of the camera to indicate the field of view.

Exposure times for pinhole photography are usually measured in minutes.

Exposure Determination.

Work out your exposure by the hit and miss method, also known as exposure determination by experimentation. This is where you say “Ooooh. I reckon about two minutes.” Then if it turns out ok, well and good. But if it’s not right, you either double it or halve it for the next exposure, depending on your assessment. Nothing wrong with that method for pinhole photography.

The History of Teddy Bears

January 29, 2010

Teddy bears have been around since 1902. The teddy bear came to being when President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shot a black bear held captive by his hunting party. Also worth noting is that President Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot this captive bear became a very popular political cartoon by Cliff Barryman.

A Brooklyn shopkeeper was inspired by the cartoon. The shopkeeper then asked President Rosevelt his permission to name a toy bear “Teddy”. Thus became the creation of the teddy bear.

It is also worth noting that the teddy bear was born in Germany between 1902 and 1903.

The first teddy bears did not have cuddly faces or smiles, in fact, the first teddy bears had expressions which could best be described as stoic. Teddy bears were also quite stiff, the bendable arms and legs and soft, plush bodies came much later.

Now teddy bears are still the number one item to give babies as their first toy, the prize to win your girl on your first date, and most importantly, the toy of choice for law enforcement to give to children in sad, unsafe situations to help them calm down and feel safe.

Some Valuable Steps On Applying Clown Makeup! Seriously, Were Not Clowning Around Here

January 29, 2010

Who doesn’t love being a clown? It’s a great costume idea for both adults and children. It looks like a lot of work to do clown makeup, but it’s actually quite easy. Here are the steps to create that classic whiteface clown:

First of all, get an idea of what clown design you’d like, whether it be the traditional white face, auguste, or hobo. Smile so you can see the apples of your cheeks, where your red paint will go. Decide what type of nose and eyebrows would look good on you. If you’re already wearing your costume, cover it up with a towel so you don’t get any makeup on it.

Get your makeup accessories ready: a palette of colors with clown white face paint, black and red grease paint, eye pencil, powder and a puff, a dusting brush, a makeup brush, and some face wipes to clear off mistakes. It’s good to use cream based makeup so it doesn’t dry out. Consider using mehron brand makeup, a well-known company that specializes in Halloween makeup.
