Santa Claus Is Coming

Holiday season brings the perennial return of Santa Claus. According to traditional lore, St. Nick flies around the world on his reindeer-powered sleigh. He lavishes gifts upon the good children of the world, and as for the naughty youngsters?well, they can expect lumps of fossil fuel in their stockings. This jovial, rotund old fellow provides a magical experience that enriches the lives of children. Right?

Well, not necessarily.

Parents often recount their childhood stories as cherished memories and want to recreate the same experiences for their children. Unfortunately, parents’ good intentions may actually lead to mixed messages that may be harmful to children-and there is no magic in that. After taking a closer look at how the Santa "fantasy" really affects children, you’ll realize that it’s time to give the traditional Santa fantasy a modern makeover.

You Better Not Pout?.

"He knows when you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake.” The song “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” provides an example of the mixed messages associated with the traditional Santa Claus myth. In this song, the take-home message for many children is: “Santa is watching you, so you better be good. If you are not good Santa won’t bring you toys.”

Opposites Do Attract Quite Well

April 12, 2008

When I am climbing up, you are stepping down. When I wear a smile, you wear a frown. When I am very happy, you are feeling sad. When I am doing well, you are faring bad.

When I am awfully hot, you are terribly cold. When I am rather shy, you are extremely bold. When I am sweet and nice, you are tough and mean. When I am upset, you are serene.

When I am at peace, you are at war. When I stand against, you stand for. When I use a comb, you use a brush. When I am being slow, you are in a rush.

When I need silence, you need to talk. When I want to jog, you want to walk. When I decide to draw, you decide to write. When I desire darkness, you desire light.

When I say, “let’s sing,” you say, “let’s pray.” When I say, “let’s go,” you say, “let’s stay.” When I yearn to go by ship, you prefer to go by plane. When I wish to take the bus, you would rather take the train.

Making Money With Digital Photography And Live Events

April 11, 2008

A few years ago I became interested in digital photography, mainly for web publishing and personal reasons. You know, how nice is it now to NOT have to deal with film, scanning pictures, and the costs of developing all of those “not great” photos that you didn’t know were so bad until you paid to have them developed!

So, at the time I got my first digital camera a friend of mine was playing in a rock band, and needed pictures for their web pages and promotional printings and ads. When I first began to do their photography, I had NO IDEA what it all would lead to… and now I will reveal to you some of the MANY ways to make money, part-time, with your love for photography!

Now, at the clubs my friend’s band played in- a lot of the time they would be in a line-up of 3 bands for the evening, of which I shot live pictures of my friend’s band’s performance. Then I got another idea, I’m there already, usually to finish the night with the band, so I started to take pictures of the other bands. Afterwards, as they were breaking down their equipment, I introduced myself as the other bands photographer, and explained that I liked their music and look- and also took pictures of them also.

A Dash of Cinnamon, A Pinch of the Past, A Smidgen of the Future

April 10, 2008

Close your eyes and remember December, the smell of cinnamon in your mother’s or grandmother’s kitchen and the warm scent of dough baking in the oven. Imagine opening the oven door and, with assistance, taking out the heated cookie sheet. Devour the cookies, small works of art, with your eyes: Fudge Brownies, Gingerbread, Nut Rolls, Painted Cookies, Sugar Cookies… With each bite, taste your childhood and family history. You can trace your blood and traditions not by DNA, genealogies and family heirlooms, but by recipes given from one generation to the next, like oral histories handed down in clans before recorded fact caught on.

Scholars once sniffed at “women’s lore,” but the notations of “1 dash nutmeg” and “1 cup chopped nuts,” when handwritten on a yellowing page, are as important to memorize as the dates of the American Revolution. They are a tangible reminder of love, care and craft in any society, but particularly in America, where encouragement to eat bags of artificially sweetened store-bought Christmas sweets leave people sugar-craving, guilty, physically and emotionally empty Christmas cookies are the opposite of this trend. They represent home, family, comfort, joy, and tradition.

Article on Poetry and Two Poems

Writing Poetry for Tomorrow

What does a man need to be a poet, or tomorrow’s literary giant? Questions many a student has asked, from Harvard all the way to the community college in one’s hometown. What is the answer? Well, I can give you mine, and I’m sure if you asked a hundred writers, or a hundred scholars, you’d get two hundred different answers.

I’m sure some would say: hard work, while others might say, the right college, or a break, or it is who you know. Money can play a part in it others would say, and timing, I mean, given the opportunity. And it may very well be all of these, but let me iron out what I think might lay underneath the cellar, for its been cleaned out pretty well above it.
